Wealthfront is a software based wealth management system with an emphasis on asset allocation with low fees. The system is based on Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT) and selects a portfolio of ETFs with the optimal mix of asset classes based on your risk tolerance.  The ETFs used for the portfolio are:

  • US Stocks (VTI)
  • Foreign Stocks (VEA)
  • Emerging Markets (VWO)
  • Dividend Stocks (VIG)
  • US Government Bonds
  • Corporate Bonds (LQD)
  • Emerging Market Bonds (EMB)
  • Municipal Bonds (MUB)
  • TIPS (SCHP)
  • Real Estate (VNQ)
  • Natural Resources (DJP)

You start by completing a questionnaire with four objective questions and six subjective ones. The purpose of the questionnaire is to determine your risk tolerance.
Wealthfront then determines your investment risk.  You can modify this risk before you invest and also once every 30 days if you wish.

The diagram below shows the investment mix for an investment risk score of 7.5.  Your portfolio is rebalanced automatically periodically to match the target allocations.

Fees: The first $10,000 in your account is managed for free. Amounts above $10,000 are assessed an annual 0.25% fee.
